2020 Now finished: GRENACHE, ‘Blewitt Springs’, The Hundred. McLaren Vale, Australia

Bin:  573

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

McLaren Vale, along the coast south-east of Adelaide, makes some of Australia’s juiciest, most exuberant, generous reds. The ocean’s proximity ensures things don’t out of hand and balance is retained.
This comes from a vineyard at 180m altitude in the Blewitt Springs sub-region. The 80 year old bush vines are dry-grown, on an easterly slope, facing the ocean.

Grape variety:

100% Grenache, fermented cool and bottled without any oak maturation, to retain maximum freshness.

Producer:

Willunga 100 was formed in 2005 by David Gleave MW and John Ratcliffe, two highly renowned English wine buyers. “We take our name from the historic ‘Hundred’ of Willunga that was established in 1839, only three years after the settlement of South Australia. At the time, 100 households were needed to occupy an area in order to qualify for a place on the map, this was called a ‘Hundred’. Today, the Hundred of Willunga is where much of our fruit comes from”. Winemakers are Mike Farmilo, Skye Salter and (consultant) Tim James.

Old Bridge rating:

This is intensely rich and powerful but still very young. Best tucked in the cellar for 5 years to let it mellow and develop.
