2016 IL SEGGIO, Poggio Al Tesoro. Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Poggio al Tessoro is a relatively new estate based in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, the area where most of the ‘Super Tuscan’ wines (based on Bordeaux grapes) have been produced. The 70 hectare property is owned by the Allegrini family, important producers of Valpolicella in the Veneto.
The temperate coastal climate seems to produce Bordeaux-style wines with more ripeness and charm than one would expect elsewhere in Italy. This is a clear example of that style, but at a very sensible price by the standards of the area.

Grape variety:

40% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot, matured for 15 months in French oak barrels (around 30% new wood).

Press review:

98/100 in Decanter Magazine:
“Deep black-red in color, with earth, complex aromas in which notes of copse and warm stone mingle with fine leather and sun-warmed plums: classy and refined. It’s deep, dark, vivid and long on the palate, with supple yet ample tannins; the bright fruits shade into laurel and thyme, and that warm-stone finesse is there on the finish. Beautifully crafted Bolgheri. 2018-2030.”
