2016 IMPERIAL, Reserva, Cvne. Rioja, Spain (Magnum)

This is a selection from old bush vines in the area around Villalba and Haro in Rioja Alta.

85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo; matured in French and American oak for 2 years.

CVNE are a huge producer but one fixated on quality, particularly for their top wines. Imperial is their range from their best vineyards, in the best vintages.

I (JH) have never been a huge Rioja fan – unlike many of our customers! I find too many are oaky and lacking fruit and freshness. This is certainly a ‘proper’ Reserva; it’s a wine of seriousness with classic Rioja flavours, it’s not trying to be modern. However it also shows a lovely balance of fruit, savouriness and gentle oak.
