2013 KICK-ON RANCH, Riesling, Tatomer. Santa Barbara, California

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Santa Barbara County is the increasingly sought-after area (north of LA, south of San Francisco) where many of the best new-wave California producers are making modern, ‘elegant’ wines.
From Graham’s website:
“This is a small vineyard located in western Los Alamos, close to the Vandenberg Air Force Base. The town of Los Alamos is wedged between the Santa Maria Valley and the Santa Ynez Valleys in Santa Barbara County. Frigid winds coming off of the cold Pacific Ocean waters flow though this vineyard daily; helping to keep it cool and dry. The owners allow me to do as much as the farming as I see fit, but I am lucky enough to have Jeffrey doing most of the work. The soil is a very sandy loam. This is a younger site with a huge future due to it’s climate. The wine I designate “Kick-on Ranch” gets the full “Austrian treatment’, meaning some skin contact and aged in neutral wood. The outcome is a wine with floral, and mineral aromas.”

Grape variety:

100% Riesling, given a little contact with the skins before fermentation with natural yeasts.

Producer:

Graham Tatomer is a brilliant and unique addition to the California wine scene. He trained at the renowned Brewer-Clifron winery in Santa Barbara but also spent 2 years with the famous Knoll winery in the Wachau, Austria. Starting solo, he decided to buy up some of the few patches of Gruner Veltliner and Riesling in his area – and to encourage growers to plant more.
The opposite of the ‘big bucks’ boutique winery that dominates California, Graham buys in grapes as and when he can, and makes his wines in one corner of a co-operative warehouse in Santa Maria.

Old Bridge rating:

This is (even by his standards) unusual – a ripe, textured Riesling. Comparable, yes, to top examples from Austria, but with a honeyed element perhaps more reminiscent of a later harvest example from Alsace.
