2015 LANGHE NEBBIOLO, La Vedetta. Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Producer:

From their agent in the UK, Ultravino:
“La Vedetta is the brainchild of Marco Viglino, a passionate and driven young man who a few years ago decided to quit his corporate nine-to-five to focus on continuing his family winemaking tradition.
Despite being a young cantina, the vines and the experience of the winemakers are second to none here. In the past, the grapes grown by the family were sold to other producers in the area and the limited number of private bottles were sold to guests of the family’s Bed and Breakfast.
Using his family’s expertise, traditional techniques, and a passion and respect for the terroir is key to Marco’s approach. Oenologist Piero Ballario (of Elio Grasso fame) consults at this tiny “garagiste” cantina.
La Vedetta is fast developing a reputation as a producer to watch in the Barbaresco growing region. Total production is 10,000 bottles: 2,000 Langhe Nebbiolo, 5,000 Barbera d’Asti and 3,000 Barbaresco.”

Old Bridge rating:

Barolo and Barbaresco from the best estates are invariably frighteningly expensive. Best value is to be found in wines that come from just outside the main zone, labelled as Nebbiolo, but still from the Langhe Hills.
This has all the classic Nebbiolo characteristics – a relatively pale colour; fragrant, delicate perfumes (best tasted from the largest wine glasses you can find); power but not heaviness; tremendous tannins on the finish, demanding food (the more savoury the better) to show it at its best.
