2020 MÂCON BUSSIÈRES, Le Vieux Puits, Drouin. Burgundy

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

The Mâconnais is the southern and warmest part of Burgundy, producing Chardonnays with ripeness and charm, often absurdly easy to drink. Bussières is a village just north east of the heartland area of Pouilly-Fuissé.
Le Vieux Puits means ‘the old wells’.

Grape variety:

Chardonnay, matured for 8 months on the lees in ‘demi-muid’ barrels (500 litres, larger than the standard, imparting much less of an oaky feel than smaller ones).

Producer:

Thierry Drouin (since 1981) and his son Charles-Edouard own and manage an estate of around 11 hectares. The winery is in the village of Vergisson, looking out over the famous rock of Solutré. Their vineyards are in Pouilly-Fuissé, Mâcon Villages and Saint-Véran.

Old Bridge rating:

Easy-drinking Mâcon with a touch of ‘extra’. Barely a hint of oak, but a lovely, subtle richness.
