2017 MALBEC, Pulenta. Mendoza, Argentina

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

The 135 hectare estate is located in Alto Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo. Like all the best Argentine vineyards they are high (average 980m), thus getting a big diurnal temperature range, helping the wines retain freshness and balance.
This wine is a blend of a Luján de Cuyo vineyard and another in the Uco Valley

Grape variety:

100% Malbec matured in French oak (half new oak) for 12 months

Producer:

The Pulenta family has been involved in the Argentine viticulture for three generations. Eduardo and Hugo Pulenta are currently holding the reins

Old Bridge rating:

A rare example of (genuinely) top quality Malbec. Too many are too heavy and oaky, whereas this has bright, red fruit aroma, combined with richness, ripeness and a creamy texture. The whole package is as self-confident and impressive as the bottle itself

Food match:

Do the Argentinians eat anything other than char-grilled steak? Apparently not – but that’s only one option for this wine. Almost any red meat will be flattered, with partridge and pheasant also happily matched
