2019 MALBEC, Terroir Series, Kaiken. Mendoza, Argentina

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

The Malbec and Petit Verdot come from Kaiken’s own vineyards in Vistaflores in the Uco Valley, while the Bonarda grapes come from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo. These are some of the best sites in Argentina – considering which, the wine is a relative bargain.

Grape variety:

80% Malbec, 12% Bonarda, 8% Petit Verdot; 10 months in new and used French oak

From their website:
“Kaikenes are wild geese, native to Patagonia, that fly across the Andes between Chile and Argentina. In the same way, Montes, the Chilean winery, crossed the Andes to set up in Mendoza.”
Montes is a large operation; but they really are focussed on achieving top quality.

Old Bridge rating:

Great to find real complexity in an affordable Malbec – it’s rich but spicy, savoury and long
