2016 MARSANNAY, Les Grasses Têtes, Coillot. Burgundy, France

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Marsannay is at the very top of the Côte de Nuits, not far south of the city of Dijon. Têtes is a vineyard on a prime site in the middle of the slope, just above the village.

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Noir, matured for 18 months in oak (very small proportion of new wood); bottled without fining or filtration.

From the website of their importer: “The Coillot domaine was established in the village of Marsannay in the 1960′s by Bernard Coillot, the father of Christophe Coillot. The estate includes 30 acres of vineyards, ranging from 20 to 65 years of age. Christophe’s philosophy is to make terroir-driven wines as natural as possible, with the least amount of intervention in the vineyard. The estate practices sustainable farming and does not use insecticides, pesticides or herbicides.”

Old Bridge rating:

Burgundy from the Marsannay area can be a bit “rough around the edges”, fruity but lean. This has admirably pure Pinot Noir fruit and, although quite powerful, a silky and refined texture.
