2016 MARSANNE-VIOGNIER, Trinity Hill. Gimblett Gravels, NZ

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Gimblett Gravels is the prized heart of the Hawkes Bay region, on the east side of the North Island. Warmer than the the more famous Marlborough region, it’s just possible to ripen red grapes here, as well as produce fine Chardonnay and other ‘serious’ whites like this. Trinity Hill have a large holding (47 hectares) in the Gravels, planted since 1993.

Grape variety:

51% Viognier, 49% Marsanne; matured on the lees in French oak (but no new wood) for 14 months.

Producer:

From the website of UK agent Liberty Wines:
“Since its inception in 1993, partners John Hancock, who has been making wine in New Zealand for over 35 years, and Robert and Robyn Wilson, owners of The Bleeding Heart and The Don in London, have made Trinity Hill a byword for quality and consistency. Winemaker Warren Gibson has been with Trinity Hill since 1997. The Trinity Hill wines have an elegance, balance, drinkability and precision of flavour.”

Old Bridge rating:

An intelligent and successful blend of classic Rhône varieties. Weight and intensity, but delicacy and freshness too.
