2018 MENCIA, Pagos del Galir. Valdeorras, NW Spain

Bin:  1476

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Valdeorras is in Galicia, in the relatively cool (and green) north west of Spain. This is where producing many of the country’s best white wines, so it’s no surprise that the reds are less powerful and heavy than what might be considered the classic Spanish style.

Grape variety:

100% Mencia; cold macerated for 4 days pre-fermentation; and then matured for 10 months in American oak (but very little new wood – this is not an ‘oaky’ wine).

Producer:

The Virgen del Galir winery was only founded in 2002, part of the C.V.N.E. empire. It has 20 hectares of vineyards, averaging a relatively high altitude of 600m, on chalk and granite soils.

Old Bridge rating:

This has the richness and fruit intensity you would expect from a Spanish red, but also an extra element of freshness that is more unusual. Both the area (Valdeorras) and the grape (Mencia) are proving to be an exciting way forward for a sometimes predictable wine making country.
