2018 MERLOT, De Martino Estate. Maipo Valley, Chile

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

The Maipo Valley has produced grapes for centuries – it’s combination of gravelly, free-draining soils and an abundant water source (the Maipo River) made it very easy to do so.
“Just as it was in the mid-16th century, the Maipo Valley remains at the heart of the Chilean wine industry. It may only contain a tenth of the country’s 116,830 ha of vines, but it is home to a large percentage of the country’s best-known wineries.” – Tim Atkin MW.
De Martino are based in the sub-region of Isla de Maipo.

Grape variety:

100% Merlot, matured for a few months in a mix of old wood and concrete vat – the idea is to retain maximum freshness of fruit.

Producer:

De Martino is quite a large winery, making nearly 2 million bottles a year, but they are hugely interested in their vineyards – working mainly organically – and are looking for wines of under-stated power, and real character. Alcohols are restrained and vinification is normally in old wood or old clay amphorae.
From the website of their UK agent:
“The De Martino family arrived in Chile from Italy in 1934 and settled in Isla de Maipo. Today, the winery is managed by brothers Sebastian and Marco De Martino who share an ongoing focus in creating wines which represent the family and their origin in the purest way possible”.

Old Bridge rating:

This has firmness and ‘structure’ – it’s a real food wine. But there’s also softness and ripeness, so a keen red wine drinker can easily tackle it on its own!
