2018 MERLOT, L’Ecole No 41. Columbia Valley, Washington State, USA

Bin:  587

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

L’ECole 41 are located in Walla Walla, the best-known quality area in Washington State.
While Seattle (and most of the wineries) sit on the coast, 99% of the state’s vineyards are west of the Cascade Mountains, in what was effectively desert until irrigation was introduced.
This wine is actually made from a blend of vineyards – Seven Hills, Ferguson and Pepper Bridge (all 3 in Walla Walla and owned by the estate); Candy Mountain (a new ‘appellation’, just south east of Red Mountain), Weinbau (within the Wahluke Slope) , Klipsun (within Red Mountain) and finally the Bacchus and Dionysus vineyards which are in the regional Columbia Valley AVA.

Grape variety:

80% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot; matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new wood).

L’Ecole No 41 was created in 1983, the third winery in Walla Walla. Owned and managed by Marty and Megan Clubb. All their wines are estate grown, and all vineyards are certified sustainable and ‘salmon-safe’ (a critical issue in the north-west).

Old Bridge rating:

Plush and impressive. Merlot at its most luxurious.
