2004 MONBAZILLAC, Château Haut Bernasse. SW France (Half bottle)

Bin:  930

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Monbazillac is a beautiful region within Bergerac (north of Bordeaux) renowned for producing sweet wine from Sémillon grapes infected by the famous ‘noble rot’ that concentrates the berries so effectively.

Grape variety:

Sémillon 85%, Muscadelle 10%, Sauvignon Blanc 5%; matured in oak for 2 years.

Producer:

A small family estate since the 19th century, bought by Guy Villette in 2002 and now run by Romain Claveille. H e manages 25 hectares of vines, most on the property, but a few on ‘métayages’ (a rental agreement).

Old Bridge rating:

The actual analysis is 12.6% and 114g of residual sugar. Which makes for a sweet wine of mid weight – not a blockbuster at all. The maturity has given it complexity and length – this is a real bargain.
