2017 MONTLOUIS, Les Bournais, François Chidaine. Loire

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Organic

Area:

Montlouis, near Vouvray in the central Loire makes dry, medium and sweet styles. Chidaine is actually based in Montlouis, but has vineyards in both.
And some detail from the website of Chidaine’s US agent:
“Les Bournais is a newly planted site overlooking the Loire river. It had been abandoned for some time, but Chidaine believes that this is one of the very best sites in Montlouis, and planted vines here in 1999. Unlike most of Montlouis, which is on clay and silex, or flint, Bournais lies on clay and limestone, and the name Bournais refers to the particular type of limestone found here. Chidaine’s goal is to vinify this dry, barring the occasional aberration such as 2005, and the result is a rich, full-bodied wine, probably the closest to Vouvray in profile of all Chidaine’s Montlouis wines.”

Grape variety:

Chenin Blanc, matured in 600 litre barrels for 6 months.

Producer:

Top quality bio-dynamic producer of about 33 hectares in total, most of which used to belong to the famous estate of Prince Poniatowski.

Old Bridge rating:

Outstanding example of an unfashionable genre: dry Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley (close to Anjou). Cultivated bio-dynamically, this has a creamy texture cut through with lemon and lime.

Press review:

“This wine is produced from a soft limestone-based soil. Malolactic fermentation is avoided here to retain crispness, and it has a superb minty freshness for the very pure yet mellow-textured white fruit. It has concentration, clarity and balance.” Decanter Magazine, 2019
