2019 MORGON `Les Charmes`, Jean-Marc Burgaud. Beaujolais, France

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Morgon is probably the most consistent Cru (or village) within the Beaujolais region. Fleurie may be an easier sell, but Morgon has a number of growers who for the last 20 years have endeavoured to prove that the Gamay grape can achieve much more than simple refreshment.

Grape variety:

60 year old Gamay, planted on granite soils (classic for the best Beaujolais), all vinified as whole bunches, before gentle maturation in concrete vats for around 6 months.

Jean-Marc Burgaud has 18 hectare of vineyards, predominantly in Morgon and the majority acquired through a very wise choice of partner, his wife Christine. He started making wine in 1989.

Old Bridge rating:

We have previously bought their top wine (the Côte du Py) and kept it for long term cellaring. This is one that could be drunk now or cellared – a fine example of both how serious and how delicious good Beaujolais can be.

Press review:

“Mid crimson. Really zesty, transparent nose – quite different from the more concentrated Côte du Py. This has the flirtatious – even slightly peppery – side that so many wine lovers seek in a cru Beaujolais. Lovely racy fruit and a juicy, drink-me quality.” Jancis Robinson
