2012 NOBLE LATE HARVEST, Paul Cluver. Elgin, South Africa (Half Bottle)

Bin:  915

Alcohol percentage:  10.5%

Area:

Elgin is a cool area, east of Stellenbosch. Famous for fruit production (the home of Appletizer!), wine was first made in the 1990s. There are still only 1,000 hectares in the valley

Grape variety:

Riesling grapes, 80% of which were concentrated by ‘botrytis’. One third is matured in oak for six months. (Analysis of 216 grammes of residual sugar; 10 grammes of acidity – so, very sweet but very fresh)

Producer:

Paul Cluver Wines were the pioneers of viticulture in Elgin and are still the largest producer. Family run, with the second generation Paul in charge, kept in check by his sisters Inge, Karin and Liesl

Maturity potential:

Will keep, but best to drink young while the freshness is so uplifiting

Food match:

All lighter puds, especially anything with exotic fruit like pineapple, mango or paw paw

Press review:
