2011 Now CÔTES DE GASCOGNE, Domaine Saint-Lannes. Gascony, France

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12%

Area:

Gascony is Armagac country, in the deep south west of France. As well as fine brandy, it’s an area that makes a lot of refreshing and inexpensive white wine, together with some rather rustic reds. This 49 hectare estate is just north of Condom(!) the regional capital

Grape variety:

80% Colombard, 20% Gros Manseng, fermented cool and bottled early for maximum freshness

Producer:

Domaine Saint-Lannes has been owned by the Duffour family since 1955, with current boss Michel in charge since 1973. He runs a classic small family business (Madame does the books) but with a rare emphasis on quality. His wine is better than his neighbours because he deliberately ‘subdues’ the high yielding Colombard to gain a more intense and aromatic result

Old Bridge rating:

Little known grapes Colombard and Gros Manseng producing a very user-friendly style, crisp and appetizing. It’s esceptional for the area – has the perfume and texture to stand comparison with a sprightly new world Sauvignon Blanc

Food match:

We’re thinking crab salad, chilli squid, spicy prawns; you choose…..
