2018 OLD VINE WHITE, De Martino. Gallardia, Itata, Chile

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

This comes from dry-farmed, ungrafted old vines, planted in 1905, in Guarilihue. The Itata Valley is the newly-discovered ‘trendy’ area in southern Chile (over 400km from Santiago); rather like Swartland in South Africa, it’s a region previously thought of as a producer of bulk wine, but now showing huge leaps in quality because of the availability of old vines and a willingness by producers to focus on grape quality rather than vineyard reputation.

Grape variety:

70% Muscat, 30% Chasselas; fermented in steel before maturation in old oak casks for almost a year.

Producer:

De Martino is quite a large winery, making nearly 2 million bottles a year, but they are hugely interested in their vineyards – working mainly organically – and are looking for wines of under-stated power, and real character. Alcohols are restrained and vinification is normally in old wood or old clay amphorae.

Old Bridge rating:

Muscat like you have never tasted it; perfumed but not overpoweringly so; dry, savoury, complex.

Press review:

“What I like about this wine is that it doesn’t have the classical Moscatel aromas; it’s very subtle and elegant, with great freshness. It’s sharp and dry, with some more varietal flavors and the tension from the granite. 91/100” – The Wine Advocate
