2015 PATELIN DE TABLAS, Tablas Creek. Paso Robles, California

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14.2%

Paso Robles is a warm region mid way between LA and San Francisco. Most of the area produces big, bold wine styles but the Tablas Creek estate is in the Adelaida district, at the north west end of the district, where hillsides and the proximity to the ocean (only 12 miles) ensure cool nights and the retention of freshness in the grapes.

Grape variety:

51% Syrah, 31% Grenache, 14% Mourvèdre, 4% Counoise; matured in barrel, but no new wood used.

A partnership between the Perrin family of the great Beaucastel estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Haas family. Robert Haas was an agent and importer for many top European estates and decided to switch to production in 1989, with their friends and colleagues the Perrins.
They farm not just organically but bio-dynamically. The wines are not labelled as organic, however, because of the crazy California regulation for organic wines that stipulates no use of Sulphur Dioxide in the winery; which is not the same as in Europe. A little sulphur is normally a very good thing.

Old Bridge rating:

Broad and ripe, but remarkably fresh and lively too.
