2013 PETITE SIRAH, Le P’tit Paysan. Monterey, California

Bin:  690

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Grape variety:

100% Petite Sirah, picked relatively early

Producer:

Le P’tit Paysan are one of very few wineries in Monterey County (south of San Francisco) trying hard to make really interesting wines. It’s normally a source for a lot of ‘bulk’.
This apparently comes a limestone and shale-rich block on Pierce Ranch in southern Monterey County.
Winemaker is Ian Brand, who also makes wine under the La Marea label, and is backed by John Allen of Coastview Vineyard in Monterey. He trained with Bonny Doon Vineyard, one of the first really interesting wineries in the area.

Old Bridge rating:

Big & burly but plenty of spice and freshness too
