2005 PINOT GRIS, Heimbourg, Selection de Grains Nobles, Zind Humbrecht. Alsace (Half bottle)

Bin:  930

Alcohol percentage:  10%

Organic

Area:

Heimbourg is a single vineyard not far from the town of Turckheim and next to the Clos Jebsal, close by Grand Cru Brand. The clay-limestone soil and steep aspect generally produces a very rich style

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Gris. (219 g/l residual sugar)

Producer:

Olivier Humbrecht has been rated by Robert Parker as one of the five best winemakers in the world. Taking over the family estate in the late 1980s, he pushes every vineyard he owns to its maximum, producing massively concentrated and complex wines. Critics have pointed to excessive sweetness in wines that would normally be dry, but Olivier now labels all his bottles with a sweetness indicator

Maturity potential:

2010-2025

Old Bridge rating:

S.G.N. indicates wines made from ‘botrytis’ grapes. ‘Noble’ bunches of grapes (i.e. those shrivelled by the fungus) are individually selected over several pickings through the vineyards. This is an extraordinary example – concentrated and exotic

Food match:

Great with strong cheese (the Alsace classic being Munster) or rich sweets, particularly anything including caramel
