2017 PINOT GRIS, Lobethal Road. Adelaide Hills, S Australia

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Adelaide Hills was one of the first successful ‘cool climate’ areas in Australia. Unlike the historic (hot) areas in South Australia (Barossa, McLaren Vale) the region has the advantage of elevation to bring freshness to the nights and to the wines.

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Gris, hand picked and whole bunch pressed, 20% fermented and matured (briefly) in oak.

Lobethal are a ‘sustainable’ (entirely powered by solar energy), family-owned winery, established in 1998 by Dave Neyle and Inga Lidums. They have just 5.5 hectares of vines.

Old Bridge rating:

Somewhere between (Alsace) ‘Gris’ and (north Italian) ‘Grigio’ in style – very cleverly made, rich but lively.

Press review:

95 pts in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion:
‘This is exceptional gris and no, that is not an oxymoron. When picked at an optimal ripening window with crunch, a phenolic pucker and oodles of nashi pear and red apple notes tamed by a gentle oaky breadth, this often anaemic variety can be versatile at the table and highly enjoyable. Here lies the proof!’
