2014 PINOT GRIS, Stopham Estate. West Sussex, England

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  11.5%

Area:

Stopham is near Pulborough in West Sussex

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Gris, fermented in steel to retain freshness, but kept on ‘lees’ for six months to gain richness and character

Producer:

Owned by Simon Woodhead. Planted in 2007, with a new winery (housed in a Victorian farm barn) in use from 2010

Maturity potential:

Has the acidity to age, but best young whilst floral and fresh

Old Bridge rating:

Just off-dry, but you barely notice any sweetness. This is very much in the style of good Alsace Pinot Gris – gentle spice and softly honeyed richness

Press review:

“At last an English wine in the first-class under £25 tier. Everybody was talking about Stopham at Liberty’s tasting and frankly this restrained 11% white, based on Pinot Gris, topped up with a dollop of elderflower-scented Bacchus, stole the show. Made by ex-Formula One racing car engineer Simon Woodhead, it delivers lashings of refined, soft, spicy hedgerow and white peach-stashed fruit. A triumph” – The Times
