2016 PINOT NOIR, ‘Crimson’, Ata Rangi. Martinborough, New Zealand (Half)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Martinborough is at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. A cool area, ideal for Pinot, first made famous by Larry McKenna when at Martinborough Vineyards, and Clive Paton at Ata Rangi. The other key to the area is the high gravel content in the soil

Grape variety:

Pinot Noir aged in French oak (25% new oak) for 9 months

Producer:

Clive Paton is the softly-spoken owner of Ata Rangi, pioneer of great New Zealand (not just Martinborough) Pinot Noir. He hosted an impressive Old Bridge wine dinner just last year. Crimson is a new wine inspired by a love of New Zealand’s native Christmas Trees, the rata and pohutukawa trees, as depicted on the label. Sales of this wine support the Project Crimson, a charitable conservation trust

Old Bridge rating:

Early-drinking, good value ‘second wine’ from a great Pinot producer.

JUST 1 HALF CRIMSON LEFT IN STOCK.

Press review:

“Crimson is supposedly the wine to introduce you to its bigger Ata Rangi estate Pinot. But perversely, you need all of the Pinot knowledge in the world to understand just how special Crimson is.” Decanter Magazine, Matthew Jukes
