2015 PINOT NOIR, ‘Roserock Zéphirine’, Domaine Drouhin. Oregon, USA

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  14.1%

Area:

Oregon is north of (and therefore cooler than) California. It has proved itself an exciting source of Burgundian style Pinot Noir (though, strangely, not Chardonnay). As in Burgundy, vintage variation, is huge; a wet, mild climate makes consistency difficult. The best results are outstanding, but expensive.
This comes from the southern part of the southern sub-region of Willamette Valley, the Eola-Amity Hills, a cool and windy area with volcanic soils where the wines invariably have firm acidity and age well

Grape variety:

Pinot Noir made in fairly classical style (no whole bunches), matured for a year – 40% new oak

Producer:

Joseph Drouhin is an important family-owned producer based in Beaune. Current patriarch Robert and his daughter Véronique decided to set up a winery in Oregon, well before the area was fashionable, producing their first vintage in 1988. Laurène is the estate’s top wine, named after Véronique Drouhin’s elder daughter.
The Roserock vineyard is certified sustainable by ‘LIVE’

Press review:

Wine Advocate – 92 Points – ” The 2014 Zépherine Pinot Noir, which is a barrel selection made at the winery, has a gorgeous bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, subtle floral notes and cold stone notes. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, pure dark plum, boysenberry and cranberry fruit vying for attention. There is good backbone here but there is still plenty of elegance on the spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. This has great potential and I am intrigued to see how it ages.”
“Adds to the herbal and fruit complexity of the Roserock with overdubbed floral and sweet spice aromas giving even more complexity and reward on the palate. Superb cranberry and black cherry notes. Green olive notes to finish. Combines excellent fruit clarity with playful winemaking and superb complexity.” 17.5/20 from Richard Hemming MW on jancisrobinson.com
