2020 PINOT NOIR, ‘Rua’, Akarua. Central Otago, New Zealand

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Central Otago on the south island is the ruggedly beautiful source of a lot of expensive and impressive (still) Pinot Noir.
From their website:
Akarua’s 50 hectare site on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, which lies at 270 metres above sea level. The soil fine and sandy with loam topsoil overlaying schist. Vines are 12 years old.

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Noir. Cold soaked for five days before fermentation and given an extra six days on the skins post fermentation to give some extra ‘backbone’. Seven months maturation in French oak (10% new oak)

Owned by the Skeggs family and benefitting from the help of consultant Tony Jordan, who put Domaine Chandon on the map in Australia.

Press review:

“Impressive Central Otago producer Akarua’s cheapest wine is a succulent, accessible joy of a Pinot, its plump palate bursting with pure cherry, raspberry and strawberry juiciness but with wonderfully lithe and silky tannins and racy acidity. Uncomplicated drinking pleasure.” 91/100 – ‘The Wine Gang’.
Our Fabulous Fifty, The Wine Merchant NZ Supplement:
“A Pinot that won over the judge’s thanks to its classic New Zealand style” with “lots of succulent fruit. It’s so bright with good structure, but what is even more impressive is the price, which is very good for a wine of this quality from Central Otago.”
“Light crimson. Juicy dark-red fruits, almost more beaujolais cru than Pinot! Light, finely textured and rather elegant. Unforced and very fresh on the finish.” Julia Harding MW.
