2019 PINOT NOIR, Sutherland. Elgin, South Africa

Bin:  426

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Elgin is a genuinely cool, coastal region, east of Cape Town, between Stellenbosch and Walker Bay. Prior to the introduction of grape growing by the Cluver family it was almost exclusively an apple production region.
Richard Kershaw MW lives on the Sutherland vineyard (by chance) and says temperatures almost never exceed 23C in February, a key month at the end of the ripening period. That’s cooler than most of Italy and Spain.
Chardonnay is the key grape but producers are having success with Pinot Noir and also Syrah, in a lighter style.

Sutherland is both the name of this single large vineyard and also the brand for the Elgin wines for Thelema, the high profile winery situated between Stellenbosch and Frannschhoek.

Old Bridge rating:

Soft and silky with lovely freshness.
