2015 PINOT NOIR, Twill Cellars. Willamette Valley, Oregon

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Oregon is north of (and therefore cooler than) California. It has proved itself an exciting source of Burgundian style Pinot Noir (though, strangely, not Chardonnay). As in Burgundy, vintage variation, is huge; a wet, mild climate makes consistency difficult. The best results are outstanding, but expensive.
This is a blend of 3 vineyards in northern Oregon, not far from Portland – ‘Stormy Morning’, just nw of the Yamhill-Carlton area; ‘Johan’, sw of Eola Amity (biodynamic); Molly’s, very close to Portland itself. All are organic or biodynamically farmed and none are actually in the AVA’s mentioned. Hence a (relative) sense of value that Twill can offer

Grape variety:

Pinot Noir, matured for 22 months in French oak (only about 10% new oak).

Producer:

Molly and Darrel Roby were growers of their own small vineyard, planted in 2000. They then decided to make their. own wine, rather than sell the grapes, and took on Chris Dickson as winemaker, who had returned after 10 years working in other wineries around the world.
