2017 PINOT NOIR, Upton Downs Vineyard, Blank Canvas. Marlborough, NZ

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Vegan

Area:

Marlborough is of course home to the oceans of Sauvignon Blanc that have made NZ popular throughout the wine-drinking world. But pockets of the area are capable of producing complex wines from other grapes, particularly Pinot. This comes from a single vineyard located in the Awatere Valley (south of the main Wairau Valley, and slightly cooler). Yields are low on the clay-gravel soils and the vineyard was planted with the aromatic Clone 777.

Grape variety:

100% Pinot Noir, 40% fermented as whole bunches, matured in French oak for a year (40% new wood).

Producer:

“Blank Canvas represents my story as a winemaker. It is an endeavour that is entirely my own expression of winemaking, is from my own funding, and is exclusively my risk.” Matt Thomson, along with partner Sophie Parker-Thomson.

Old Bridge rating:

Matt and Sophie presented a range of their wines to us and our customers at The Old Bridge in September 2019. The Pinot stood out as a brilliant example of what they are setting out to do – capturing the subtle, elusive quality of both the grape and the origin. This is fine wine, clearly new world, but with complex spice and real elegance.

Press review:

“hints of floral and citrus as well as the red fruits. There’s intensity without unwanted concentration, the fruit is sweet but not overly so and the tannins already silky. Freshness to the long finish.” 18/20, Julia Harding MW on jancisrobinson.com
