2018 PINOT NOIR, Wild Earth. Central Otago, New Zealand

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Central Otago is the spectacular region (location for much of the Lord of the Rings series) in the middle of NZ’s south island that shot to fame in the 90’s as the ‘new’ nirvana for new world Pinot Noir. By normal standards, C.O. is too hot for Pinot, with fairly fierce day-time highs; but these are brief and nights are equally cool, retaining the natural acidity in the vines. The result is wines of depth (both colour and flavour) but balanced by lively freshness and lots of complexity.

Grape variety:

Pinot Noir, fermented 20% as whole bunches, and matured for a year in French oak barrels (25% new wood).

Quintin Quider moved from California to New Zealand and in 1998 established his own winery at the end of Felton Road (the name and location of NZ’s most sough-after Pinot producer) in Bannockburn, next to the Kawarau River. Winemaker is Peter Bartle and viticulturist is Gary Crabbe.

Old Bridge rating:

A great example of Central Otago Pinot at a relatively sensible price point. Hedonistic ripeness, but nicely balanced.

Press review:

Gold Medal, Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 –
“Juicy fruit and cherry wood on the nose. Silky texture on the palate with sweet generous fruits and noticeable vanilla oak on a long, spicy finish”.
