2016 POUILLY-FUISSÉ, Aux Vignes Dessus, Gilles Morat.

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Organic

Area:

Pouilly-Fuissé is the most prestigious appellation in the Mâconnais region in southern Burgundy. Renowned for making the richest, most luscious Chardonnays in France, styles are now a little more restrained and elegant – certainly from the best vignerons.
Aux Vignes Dessus is one of 17 vineyards the estate owns in the village of Vergisson. This comes from 35 year old vines at the top of a south-facing slope.

Grape variety:

Chardonnay, fermented and matured in oak barrel for 11 months, on the lees (only 10-15% new wood used).

Producer:

Words from their UK agent, Flint Wines:
“Gilles Morat was born into a wine family in the now very fashionable village of Vergisson in the heart of the Mâconnais and in 1997 took over a share of the family business. He added to this both by buying new vineyards and setting up rental contracts and a few years later, when the domaine had reached a certain size, his wife, Joëlle, joined the operation. Today, with 6 hectares of vines, mainly Pouilly-Fuissé but also a little Saint-Véran, the two are very much a team. Although small recent vintages have made supplying the growing demand for their wines virtually impossible, they are generally happy to maintain a small, artisanal approach, which allows them to be so quality driven. They know their vines like the backs of their hands and can adapt their work in the vineyards in a very micro-managed way, carrying out work or treatment only where necessary. The domaine is organic and yields are kept low, naturally. ‘If Pouilly-Fuissé can be said to have superstars, then Gilles Morat would certainly count as one.’ The Wall Street Journal, July 2010”

Old Bridge rating:

About as good as Fuissé can get (which means very good!) The richness of the appellation with the finesse of both a great vintage and a top producer.
