2019 QUINTA DE LA ROSA, Tinto. Douro, Portugal

Bin:  488

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Warm summers and the steep, granitic slopes of the Douro valley make for low yields and some of the ripest, most intense red grapes in the world. Producers realised many years ago that they could not sell all their wine as Port so the Douro red wine revolution took place – with rather brilliant results.

Grape variety:

40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 30% Tinta Roriz. Foot trodden in granite lagares before fermentation in steel and a year’s ageing in French oak (30% new wood).

Quinta de la Rosa is run by the indomitable Sophia Bergqvist. The estate was given as a christening present to Sophia’s grandmother in 1906! It was a grape producer for larger houses when Sophia and her father Tim started production themselves.
The style has always been traditional, with foot-treading of the grapes for Port styles (they also make white, rosé and red wines). Their winemaker since 2002 has been the renowned Jorge Moreira.

Old Bridge rating:

Dense and powerful but (with the right food) generous in fruit and very approachable already.
