2020 RAMILO BRANCO. Lisboa, Portugal

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Lisboa is (obviously) the area around the country’s capital. The estate its north of Sintra, which itself is just north of the city; and about 10km from the Atlantic. In the 19th century the area was full of vineyards, most were abandoned as could not produce the high quantities to survive in what became a very commercial marketplace.

Grape variety:

Arinto, Viosinho, and Alvarinho; fermented (with wild yeasts) in steel tanks.

Producer:

From their UK agent, Raymond Reynolds:
“Ramilo Family Wines are a fourth generation producer who, now under the direction of brothers Nuno and Pedro Ramilo, have transitioned from a simple grape grower to an estate wine producer. They have planted several vineyards in the Lizandro Valley, North of Lisbon, with local clones of indigenous varieties such as Castelão and Vital. They’re producing wonderful, fresh wines from these low-yielding vines on clay-limestone soils, with a definite Atlantic influence.”

Old Bridge rating:

One really can feel the influence of the ocean that Raymond refers to. This is bracingly dry with a salty, zesty tang. An absolutely perfect match for seafood.
