2014 RIESLING, ‘Julius’, Henschke. Eden Vally, South Australia

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  11.5%

Eden Valley is just above the Barossa, but higher and much cooler – hence its suitability for a cool climate grape like Riesling

Grape variety:

100% Riesling fermented in stainless steel and bottled early to preserve maximum freshness

The Henschke family settled in the Barossa in 1861 and now fifth-generation Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue uphold the family name and reputation, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. All their vineyards are both organic and biodynamic.
Their top wine, Hill of Grace, first released in 1958 has made them word-famous, second only in the Aussie roll of honour to Grange Hermitage (but actually a more interesting wine!)

Old Bridge rating:

In their desire to prove they can make wines that don’t taste like old-fashioned Chardonnay, Aussie winemakers have taken their Rieslings down a difficult road. Most are too hard, too austere, too macho. The Henschkes, however, always have a gentle hand on the tiller. This is bone-dry, but with just enough ripeness and aromatics to give charm and drinkability from an early age (although it will certainly age 10 years plus)

Press review:

“Julius Riesling is a star performer. Again in 2014. Excellent intensity. Lime and slate flavours swing juicily through the palate before marshalling forces and penetrating through the finish. Zesty, dry and thrillingly long. Standout.” www.winefront.com.au
