2016 RIESLING, Steinhugel, Tatomer. Santa Lucia Highlands, California

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Graham Tatomer is based in Santa Barbara County – the increasingly sought-after area (north of LA, south of San Francisco) where many of the best new-wave California producers are making modern, ‘elegant’ wines. Grapes for this wine come from a biodynamically-farmed vineyard in Santa Lucia Highlands, further north, near Monterey.

Graham Tatomer is a brilliant and unique addition to the California wine scene. He trained at the renowned Brewer-Clifron winery in Santa Barbara but also spent 2 years with the famous Knoll winery in the Wachau, Austria. Starting solo, he decided to buy up some of the few patches of Gruner Veltliner and Riesling in his area – and to encourage growers to plant more – as well as working with some (less unique but equally fascinating) Pinot Noir.
The opposite of the ‘big bucks’ boutique winery that dominates California, Graham buys in grapes as and when he can, and makes his wines in one corner of a co-operative warehouse in Santa Maria.

Old Bridge rating:

Zesty, light, bright, charming – just what you might not expect from a California white wine…..
