2017 ROUSSANNE, Stolpman. Ballard Canyon, California

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Ballard Canyon is in Santa Barbara County, closer to LA than San Francisco. It’s a moderate rather than cool sub-region, so unlike some of the neighbouring areas that specialise in Chardonnay and Pinot, the key grapes here are Syrah and white Rhône varieties.

Grape variety:

Dry-farmed (still unusual in California) Roussanne (with 12% of Chardonnay), fermented and matured for 15 months in 500 litre oak barrels (25% new wood).

Producer:

150 acres of vineyard, owned and run by the Stolpman family with the help of consultant winemaker Sashi Moorman.

Old Bridge rating:

Exotic richness with balanced acidity – hedonistic but not overpowering.

Press review:

“Aged for 9 months in 25% new French oak, a reduction from its prior elevage of entirely new wood. The nose is oily but poised, with classic Roussanne aromas of stone fruit and jasmine flowers. Its texture is fleshy and supple, bound together by a clean, lively core. This vintage contains 12% Chardonnay to bolster the structure of the finish, and I applaud Stolpman for being upfront about the use of a non-typical variety in the blend.” – 93/100, Decanter Magazine, September 2019
