2015 SABOTEUR WHITE, Luddite. Bot River, South Africa

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

The Chenin Blanc is from Bot River (a relatively new cool climate region, on the edge of Elgin, and were Luddite are based); the Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are from Elgin.

Grape variety:

68% Chenin Blanc, 15% Viognier, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Chardonnay; the Chenin and Viognier are fermented on their skins for 20 days; all is matured in old oak for 8 months

Saboteur is the ‘other’ label of Niels Verburg who was winemaker at nearby Beaumont and Iona before setting up Luddite wines. As the names imply his approach is ‘hands-off’ or ‘low intervention’ but his wines are not ‘funky’ and ‘natural’; they are innovative and expressive, but super clean and fine.

Old Bridge rating:

Brilliant mixture of textural richness and fresh apple acidity. Just reaching a perfect state of maturity in 2018.

Press review:

“A complex blend of peaches, candied apricot and a savoury grassiness give this wine an intriguing character. There is a driving acidity leading to a tenacious vivacity. Sweet spice and exotic fruit are well balanced with an oily mouthfeel that lingers in the memory after tasting” – from ‘The most exciting dry wines of 2016’ in Decanter Magazine
