2014 SANTENAY, 1er Cru Passetemps, J-C Boisset. Burgundy

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Santenay is the southernmost vineyard on the Cote de Beaune. The soils are clay (rather than limestone) dominated so it has historically been predominantly a red wine appellation. But the whites are getting better and better, particularly in good vintages of course.
Passe Temps is a Premier Cru vineyard, just east of the village and not far from the border with Chassagne Montrachet

Grape variety:

100% Chardonnay, fermented long and cool in barrel (30% new oak), followed by maturation for 18 months in wood, on its lees

Jean-Claude Boisset is one of Burgundy’s largest merchants but has been transformed since they brought in Gregory Patriat to run operations in 2002. This is now one of the most modern operations in the area, producing fruit-forward wines of impressive concentration, without losing elegance

Old Bridge rating:

This is expensive for a Santenay, Boisset’s wines normally are expensive. But they are given the luxury treatment and in this case it really works. This is ripe but still bright – a great example of the lovely 2014 vintage.
