2019 SAUVIGNON BLANC, De Martino Estate. Casablanca Valley, Chile

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

De Martino are based in inland Maipo but they also farm in coastal Casablanca where the cooler conditions are ideal for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Grape variety:

100% Sauvignon Blanc, from granite soils, fermented cool (14-16C) and kept in steel tank on its lees for 6 months before bottling.

Producer:

De Martino is quite a large winery, making nearly 2 million bottles a year, but they are hugely interested in their vineyards – working mainly organically – and are looking for wines of under-stated power, and real character. Alcohols are restrained and vinification is normally in old wood or old clay amphorae.
From the website of their UK agent:
“The De Martino family arrived in Chile from Italy in 1934 and settled in Isla de Maipo. Today, the winery is managed by brothers Sebastian and Marco De Martino who share an ongoing focus in creating wines which represent the family and their origin in the purest way possible”.

Old Bridge rating:

Not as aromatic as NZ examples but softer and riper than French styles. A great compromise that should please anyone who enjoys the uK’s most popular grape variety.
