2009 SAVENNIERES, Patrick Baudouin. Loire Valley, France

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Savennières is in the heart of the Anjou region, not far from Vouvray, and has the reputation for producing the Loire’s most concentrated and longest-lived DRY whites

Grape variety:

100% Chenin Blanc, 35 year old vines, aged for 10 months in barrel, half the wood new

Patrick Baudouin farms just 13 hectares, 10 of Chenin and 3.5 of Cabernet Franc. This plot of Savennieres is just 1.5 hectares

Maturity potential:

Will improve to at least 2016, probably much longer (I only hesitate as the estate is so new)

Old Bridge rating:

This is a concentrated wine (yields were 30 hl/ha, about half the permitted maximum). Still young, with citrus dominating, but clearly has the potential to age well

Food match:

Patrick recommends river fish in butter sauce
