1995 SCHEUREBE, Zwischen den Seen, No 14, Tba, Kracher. Austria (Half)

Bin:  930

Alcohol percentage:  6%

Area:

Kracher’s vines are on the shores of a huge lake, the Neusiedlersee. Morning mists come regularly in early autumn, followed by warm afternoons: perfect conditions for producing ‘noble rot’ (botyrtis cinerea) which shrivels the grapes, concentrating both sugars and acids

Grape variety:

Scheurebe of incredible concentration (very high readings of 323 g/l residual sugar and 10 g/l acidity). Aged in large wooden barrel for 18 months

Producer:

Alois Kracher died in 2007, aged just 48. A great sweet wine producer who helped restore the reputation of Austria after its wine scandal in the 1980s. His son Gerhard has taken over and maintained the exceptional standards of the estate

Maturity potential:

Now ready, but will hold to 2016

Old Bridge rating:

Deep gold; complex barley sugar aromas; concentrated and viscous, but still fresh

Food match:

Sticky enough to cope with rich puddings (bread and butter pudding could work well). But be sure to sip some before and after – this is almost a meal in itself
