2014 SHIRAZ, Shaw and Smith. Adelaide Hills, South Australia (Magnum)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  14%

The Adelaide Hills is a cool climate region in South Australia. It’s an extenseive range of hills, starting right above the city and moving south, looking down on hot and dusty McLaren Vale below. With proven quality for elegant Shiraz, medium-bodied Pinot and fresh, modern Chardonnay.

Grape variety:

100% Shiraz, fermented with a mixture of whole bunches and individual berries; aged in French oak (one third new oak) for 14 months.

Michael Hill Smith (Australia’s first MW) and Martin Shaw established the winery in 1989; they were pioneers of modern, fresh, elegant Aussie wines. They are great ambassadors for Australian wine in general.

Maturity potential:

Has the backbone to age for at least 10 years, although very drinkable young.

Old Bridge rating:

A cool climate style of Shiraz; rich but peppery and lively. Made by a dynamic duo who were pioneers in promoting elegance and balance in Australian wine, rather than just fruit and concentration.

Food match:

Exceptional freshness for an Aussie Shiraz – hence exceptional food-friendliness. Bring on the winter stews.

Press review:

“Has established a consistent reputation as one of Australia’s best cool climate shirazs, low yields (especially in 2014) and site selection all-important. Handpicked, partial whole bunch and remainder whole berry open-fermented, matured in French oak (33% new) for 14 months. A super-fragrant red cherry bouquet, with notes of mulberry, licorice and plum joining the vibrant red fruits of the palate, backed by firm, precisely framed tannins.” 96/100 James Halliday’s Wine Companion
