2010 SPRINGVALE RIESLING, Grosset. Clare Valley, South Australia

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide.
Springvale vineyard is located in the north-eastern corner of Clare Valley’s Watervale subregion

Grape variety:

100% Riesling

Producer:

As he celebrates his thirtieth vintage in 2010, Jeffrey Grosset is acknowledged as the master of Aussie Riesling. Most famous for the ‘Polish Hill’ (which always needs several years to reach maturity), his most drinkable and approachable wine is the ‘Springvale’ Watervale Riesling

Maturity potential:

Springvale is always drinkable young. Or keep it for 10 years and watch it gain complex aromas and textural intensity

Old Bridge rating:

Genuinely compares with the fine Alsace and Austrian examples at this (and higher) price levels

Press review:

16.5 points, www.jancisRobinson.com –
“Crunchy mouth-filling fruit. Pure, minerally finish. Very juicy and satisfying.”
Five Stars, Decanter Magazine, September 2011 – “Lime, lemon peel and spicy kaffir lime leaves on the nose – classic! Very tight-knit palate with thrusting acidity and juicy, citrus, peach and lanolin complexity. It’s dry but has palate richness and concentration. Intense”.
95 points, Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday, 27 July 2011 – “Bright straw-green; a generous bouquet and palate, with ripe citrus and tropical aromas and flavours; impeccable line, length and balance. Offers much now, yet more in the future.”
