2011 ST JOSEPH, Préface, Pierre-Jean Villa. Northern Rhône

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Area:

Saint-Joseph is the least well known appellation in the northern Rhône. It is spread rather loosely over fifty kilometres of the river, so has little geographical or stylistic cohesion. Many, like this, are light, aromatic wines, comparable to Crozes Hermitage, others are powerful wines more in the style of Hermitage itself

Grape variety:

100% Syrah, matured for a year in used 500litre barrels

Producer:

Pierre-Jean trained in Burgundy and then spent 10 years as the régisseur at “Les Vins de Vienne”, working with some of the most famous names in the area to restore some forgotten vineyards in the northern Rhone. In 2009 he created his own small estate

Old Bridge rating:

There’s a lightness and freshness to this Syrah that may surprise many ‘trad’ Rhone fans. A modern style – and a very good example of that trend
