2013 SYRAH, Richard Kershaw. Elgin, South Africa

Bin:  690

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Elgin is a genuinely cool, coastal region, east of Cape Town, between Stellenbosch and Walker Bay. Prior to the introduction of grape growing by the Cluver family it was almost exclusively an apple production region.
Richard says temperatures almost never exceed 23C in February, a key month at the end of the ripening period. That’s cooler than most of Italy and Spain.
Chardonnay is the key grape but producers are having success with Pinot Noir and also Syrah, in a lighter style, as this exemplifies.

Grape variety:

100% Syrah fermented with natural yeasts and matured for 17 months in French oak (half new).

Richard Kershaw, an English Master of Wine, was originally a Chef then a winemaker, eventually in charge at Mulderbosch and Kanu wineries, before starting his own project.

Old Bridge rating:

Medium-bodied, aromatic and fresh, with gentle spice. Comparable to a Crozes Hermitage, as you would really like it to be….
