2017 THE BOXER, Mollydooker. South Australia – NOW FINISHED

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  16%

Blend of vineyard sources – 45% Langhorne Creek, 38% Padthaway, 17% McLaren Vale (South Australia).

Grape variety:

100% Syrah, aged in American oak (about half of it new oak).

Sarah and Sparky Marquis only started Mollydooker – an Aussie term for left-hander – in 2007, buying a new winery in McLaren Vale with 116 acres of prime vineyards. Their motto is ‘We make wines which make people go WOW, through attention to detail and commitment to excellence’. They have already attained cult status in the USA where their high octane style is hugely popular.

Maturity potential:

Hard to predict. May age but with this level of alcohol, who knows? Suggest you drink it within 5 years to be safe.

Old Bridge rating:

Appropriate cartoon label – the wine is a caricature of Aussie Shiraz. But a serious caricature; a puffed up, overblown and yet impressive creation. Mouth-filling viscocity propped up with a buttress of black pepper.

Food match:

Mollydooker propose ribeye steak. We think perhaps you should treat it more like a Port – really very good with a cheese selection.
