2013 THE HUNDRED, Grenache. McLaren Vale, Australia

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

From the Willunga website: “The Grenache for The Hundred comes from Sue Trott’s vineyard located at an altitude of 180 metres in the Blewitt Springs sub-region. These vines are dry grown and some of the oldest in the district, planted some 80 years ago. Soils here are the distinctive ancient sandy soils only found in Blewitt Springs with an underlying clay and ironstone base. The vines are planted on an easterly facing slope with magnificent views over McLaren Vale and out to sea. The mediterranean climate of the McLaren Vale has warm sunny days with sea breeze influences from the nearby Gulf of St Vincent – perfect for ripening the grapes whilst maintaining a crisp, clean acid structure.”

Grape variety:

100% Grenache, made without the use of oak, to emphasise freshness and vibrancy

Old Bridge rating:

Juicy, bright, charming expression of the under-appreciated Grenache grape

Press review:

Decanter Magazine, September 2014, Australia’s best wines under £25 – “A project funded 10 years ago by three industry experts who found a dearth of good-value, quality Aussie wines. This is their flagship, showing lots of vibrant red fruit and floral characters. Power with elegance and freshness with fine tannins and cherry spice on finish”
