2013 TOCAO, Clos des Fous. Bio Bio, Chile

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Bio Bio is a relatively unknown, cool, southern region in Chile. This is from a vineyard planted in 1914. ‘Tocao’ means ‘touched in the head’ – referring to the slight ‘madness’ of growing Malbec in this region

Grape variety:

80% Malbec, 20% Carginan; matured for 2 years in French oak (30% new oak)

Producer:

Clos des Fous is a joint venture between four Chilean friends: Pedro Parra, a renowned viticulturalist, François Massoc and Paco Leyton (winemakers), and Albert Cussen, the business brain. ‘Fous’ means mad or crazy, referring to their desire to go outside the normal Chilean vineyard areas (and styles). Pedro Parra has himself discovered several of the country’s most exciting new sites.
Pour Ma Gueule in French literally means “for my throat”, indicating a wine to quench the thirst, to drink without pretensions.

Press review:

“This is incredible with ripe and rich fruit and dark berries, wet earth, and hints of mahogany. Full to medium body, firm tannins, and a beautiful finish. So long and intense. The dried fruit and acid contrast is mind-blowing. Watch out Argentina: This might be the greatest malbec ever made in Chile. Only 300 cases made. Drink now or hold.” 97/100, James Suckling
