2003 TOKAJI, Cuvée Illona, Kiralyudvar. Hungary (50cl bottle)

Bin:  959

Alcohol percentage:  11.5%

Area:

Hungary’s renowned sweet wine area is north east of Budapest

Producer:

Kiralyudvar is owned by entrepeneur Tony Hwang with Noel Pinguet of Domaine Huet in Vouvray as consultant. The Illona is simply a ‘botrytis’ wine (i.e. made with grapes concentrated by botrytis infection) rather than a traditional ‘Aszu’ wine. It has a very high level of sugar (190 grammes per litre) which makes it even richer than a ‘6 puttonyos’

Maturity potential:

2008-2030: good Tokaji lives for ever….

Old Bridge rating:

Modern version of Tokaji – all the concentration and intensity, but with no oxidation

Press review:

“Stonking is the only word for this modern take on traditional Tokaji: a glorious rich confection of sweet dried apricot and peach jam whose intense fruit flavour is tempered by a mouthwatering citrusy tang and rounded out by the smoothness of barrel fermentation” – Anthony Rose, The Independent, November 2008
